The Fourth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition was held on July 19-20 in Haymarket, Virginia. This year’s event included 458 wine entries from 100 wineries in 12 states. The 2007 Riesling was awarded Best of Show in addition to best Riesling.

Newport Vineyards was one of only two wineries to win two Best of Category awards. In addition to the Riesling, the winery also won for best White Vinifera Blend, with its 2007 Tranquility. This wine is composed of Gewurztraminer, Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

“To take Best of Show out of 458 entries is a milestone achievement for Rhode Island wines”, explains George Chelf, winemaker for Newport Vineyards, “especially against some of the best wines in the country”.

Both wines will be included at an awards presentation and wine tasting reception on Capitol Hill under the auspices of the U.S. Congressional Wine Caucus in September. They will also be poured at the “Taste of the Best of the Atlantic Seaboard” at COPIA, the American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts in Napa Valley later this year. 2006 - A Great Year !!! - 12/31/2006

We would like to thank Mother Nature for giving our grapes a fantastic growing season. The warm weather in the Fall allowed us to extent the "hang" time and develop terrific flavor profiles. Look for rich tropical flavors in our 2006 white wines, particullarly the Pinot Grigio, Riesling and our first ever Gewurtztraminer. The warm temperatures and lack frost in October allowed for great fruit flavors in the red wines as well. We picked the Cabs in early November! It actually took until December to get barely enough frosty temps to pick a bit of Ice Wine (the birds got thier share). Since then the mild weather has allowed us to progress ahead of schedule with our 50 acres of winter pruning. The vines look very healthy going into the winter so we are optimistic that they will start off well in 2007. Newport Vineyards would like to thank all of it's dedicated customers for making 2006 a great year and we look forward to you enjoying the great wines of Vintage 2007. Look for our Spring releases of Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer!

2006 Vintage Looking Great ! - 10/20/2006

As October comes to a close and the last of the grapes make their way to the winery, we look back on a season that won't be forgotten. Cool nights and warm fall days will bless the year's wines with bright delicious flavors and bountiful expression. New varietals of the year include a spicy Gewurtztraminer and a richly red Landot Noir (Rochambeau). Winemaker favorites like Pinot Grigio and Riesling look to be full of character as the healthy fermentations start to kick in. As a warm Halloween concludes, it's all in but the Cab and Ice Wine (late November). Stay tuned.

Let the harvest begin ! - 9/20/2006

On September 20th, Newport Vineyards started this year's vintage harvest. Extremely ripe Pinot Noir grapes were carefully selected to begin the year on an outstanding note. After a bit of Spring rain, the summer warmth combined with regular rain to keep the vines fruitful and healthy. A very warm and dry September should top things off. Stop by the vineyard and see for yourself!
